Hayes is situated between West Wickham and the large town centre of Bromley. Originally a village, Hayes has since been engulfed by the expanding suburbs of Greater London, the centre of which is only 16 miles away. The high street of Hayes still retains a village feel to it and consists mainly of small independent shops and restaurants. To the east of the high street, Hayes is still framed by open park land and green fields.

Hayes has its own small railway station situated to the south end of the high street. The station is the end of the line for a service that serves London Bridge and London Charing Cross as well as other local stations. The station ensures that Hayes remains a popular commuter village. Housing is predominantly post 1920's and consists of largely semi-detached and detached properties, although some flats and maisonette style accommodation can be found near to the station. Hayes remains a very leafy and open suburb with housing around the wooded Hayes Common offering the most rural setting.

Bromley boasts the area's major shopping centre in the Glades where many household names can be found, alongside a large number of smaller shops, restaurants and bars. A thriving business community surrounds the town centre with numerous large office complexes. Several health and sports clubs, a theatre and a library are also close at hand to the town centre.

The town is well served by two train stations. The main station, Bromley South serves London Victoria while Bromley North provides a link to more immediate local stations and London Bridge. Due to its rail links, Bromley is a popular commuter town for London.

Bromley has a very diverse range of properties. The town centre has numerous newly built apartment complexes, while more traditional terraced and semi-detached houses surround the immediate town centre. A large number of properties are Victorian, some of which have been converted to flats. Larger, detached houses are available a mile or two from the town centre which is framed by numerous parks and golf courses.
